6 July 2000: Jinny Software launches mCommerce division with presentation of its WAP Appliance™ - Ennis becomes the first town in Ireland to offer its mobile residents customised WAP services
Dublin, 6 July 2000: The eircom Ennis Information Age town was presented with Jinny Software's enterprise WAP Gateway, the WAP Appliance™, today as part of its official Mobile Commerce Division launch. Minister Mary O'Rourke, TD officiated at the launch at which Jinny Software announced that Ciaran Carey, former head of mCOmmerce for Eircell, is to head up a team of experts to focus on the area of Mobile Commerce.
The WAP Gateway is another technology first for Ennis as Ireland's Information Age Town. A range of services will be rolled out from the Ennis WAP Gateway in September 2000 to allow residents customise the information they receive on their mobile phones via the Internet. Over the twelve month trial period from September, local businesses will also have the opportunity to make corporate and customer information easily and instantly available to their sales representatives and mobile employees as they need it. The WAP Appliance provides a link to all Internet based information, including corporate websites, Intranet or Extranet for employees, customers, suppliers or partners to access directly using the mobile phone.
Speaking at the event, the Minister for Public Enterprise, Mary O'Rourke, TD, said:
"Jinny Software is yet another example of a dynamic, innovative Irish company that is harnessing the opportunities associated with the internet and bringing the information society to mobile phone users."
Also commenting on the Electronic Commerce Bill, which is expected to be signed by the President next week, Minister O'Rourke acknowledged the importance of this technology and how it will benefit businesses and consumers.
This presentation and launch demonstrates Jinny Software's commitment to the wireless Internet revolution in Ireland and is timely as the company celebrates its first year in operations. Ireland is already proving to be a pioneer for mobile telecommunications, with the world's first secure mobile commerce transaction taking place on January 11, 2000, when the Minister Mary O'Rourke securely purchased an airline ticket online over a mobile phone.

Michael Byrne, CEO, eircom Ennis Information Age Town stated:
"I warmly welcome the active interest Jinny Software has taken in eircom Ennis Information Age Town. Working with the worlds best technology companies is central to one of our key objectives - that Ennis becomes an IT centre of excellence. The Jinny Software WAP application is in line with our strategy for creating more on-line presence for mobile users. We recognise that the mobile phone is becoming an indispensable tool as people embrace technology to gain faster and more accurate information specific to their personal needs."Ciaran Carey, Head of mCommerce, Jinny Software, stated:
"WAP brings a fifth dimension to the Internet. A sense of place has been re-introduced to the Wireless Web - rather then information being available to anyone, anywhere - people can now access information and data which is relevant to them while they are on the move, information that is specific to their location. Jinny software is delighted to have the opportunity to work with eircom Ennis Information Age Town and to bring this advantage to its residents. Ennis will be the first town in Ireland to enable businesses to offer WAP services to residents, continuing on a tradition of firsts starting with the first secure download of cash onto a smart card using WAP technology."This presentation and launch demonstrates Jinny Software's commitment to the wireless Internet revolution in Ireland and is timely as the company celebrates its first year in operations. As a result, eircom invested £15 million to provide completely integrated information age telecommunications technology, infrastructure and training in Ennis. Nowhere else has had the experience of having such a wide range of 21st century communications technologies and tools deployed at one time and in one place, while at the same time acting as a test bed for a range of the new technologies and applications that will ultimately transform all our lives, wherever we live. www.ennis.ieAbout Jinny Software
